The city of Trieste is set to host the second edition of the “Festival of Trieste – The Lighthouse of Music,” which will run from September 7 to 18, 2024. Featuring 29 performances across the city, the festival aims to showcase Trieste as one of the leading European destinations for music.
The festival will offer a diverse range of concerts and events, including both music and dance, held in various locations throughout Trieste. It seeks to attract a wide audience by incorporating performances across different venues and public spaces.
The festival’s activities will begin with a preview on September 5 in Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, where LaFil Filarmonica of Milan will perform works by Mozart, Vivaldi, and Astor Piazzolla, led by conductor Marco Seco. This preview concert will also mark the opening of the Festival Music Center, a central hub that will provide concert information, facilitate artist interactions, and serve as a ticket point.
The official opening of the festival will take place on September 7 at Teatro Verdi, where pianist Alexander Melnikov will perform alongside the LaFil Philharmonic of Milan. The festival will also include educational activities, such as the “Sound Stories Workshop,” designed to engage music enthusiasts of all ages.
Additional highlights include a performance on September 9 by Albrecht Mayer, principal oboist of the Berlin Philharmonic, and Andreas Ottensamer, principal clarinetist of the same orchestra, who will conduct the LaFil Philharmonic at Teatro Verdi.
Festival director Marco Seco noted that the programming of outdoor performances was intentionally designed to connect with the festive traditions of the music being performed, including works such as Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires will also be performed, presenting a contrast between natural and urban musical themes.
The festival is organized by the Trieste Society of Concerts in partnership with the Municipality of Trieste and supported by various cultural institutions and sponsors, including the Italian Ministry of Culture, Generali Italia Spa, and the Casali Foundation.
