Due to unforeseen weather conditions, the city of Trieste has postponed a scheduled radical disinfestation operation aimed at controlling a dengue outbreak. Initially set for tonight, the operation will now take place during the night between Friday, September 6, and Saturday, September 7.
The disinfestation will target a 200-meter radius area encompassing Piazza Garibaldi and the Ospedale Maggiore, following the confirmation of a dengue case by the ASUGI Department of Prevention. The larvicidal treatment will commence at 9:00 PM, with adulticidal measures to follow around 11:00 PM.
To facilitate the operation, the Municipality of Trieste has issued a new ordinance, signed by Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, outlining necessary preventive measures. Residents, commercial operators, and managers of public and private spaces within the affected zone must adhere to specific guidelines to ensure the efficacy of the treatment.
Among the precautions, residents are advised to stay indoors with all windows and doors closed, turn off air exchange systems, and keep pets and their belongings covered. Garden produce should be collected or plants covered tightly with plastic sheets. After the treatment, any exposed outdoor furniture and toys should be cleaned with gloves.
In the following weeks, residents are instructed to avoid creating conditions that could facilitate further breeding of mosquitoes. This includes emptying containers that could collect rainwater and treating drainage systems with effective larvicides. Regular maintenance of yards and outdoor spaces is also recommended to prevent mosquito nesting.
Additionally, a traffic ban will be in effect from approximately 10:00 PM on September 6 to 1:00 AM on September 7, affecting various streets within the outlined area. Exceptions will be made for emergency services, law enforcement, and vehicles involved in the disinfestation efforts.
The Municipality of Trieste urges all residents to follow the directives carefully to help contain the dengue outbreak and ensure public health safety.
