In a time when artificial intelligence (AI) and technological advancements are reshaping every aspect of life, Trieste will soon become the epicenter of global scientific debate. The annual Festival of Scientific Research, known as Trieste Next, returns from September 27 to 29 with a program packed with over 100 events—offering a unique exploration of the evolving relationship between humanity and technology.
Now in its 13th edition, Trieste Next will once again transform the historic Piazza Unità d’Italia into a vibrant platform where hundreds of international scientists will meet the public to tackle some of the most pressing issues of our time. The festival, a hallmark event for the city, will feature discussions ranging from the ethical implications of AI to sustainability, precision medicine, and the future of food.
A Star-Studded Lineup of Global Experts
This year, Trieste Next boasts a diverse lineup of more than 300 speakers, including Nobel laureates and thought leaders from the fields of physics, data science, and ethics. Among the notable attendees are Andre I. Geim, Nobel Prize winner in Physics and Regius Professor at the University of Manchester; Nicola Piovani, Oscar-winning composer; and Michael I. Jordan, a data science professor at UC Berkeley, recognized globally for his contributions to AI and mathematics.
Joining them are Wieland Huttner, emeritus director of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics; Italian Senator Elena Cattaneo, a leading neuroscientist; and philosopher of science Telmo Pievani, among many others. These distinguished experts will engage in high-level discussions about the future of AI and its profound impacts on society, work, and creativity.
The festival will also feature a special collaboration with the AIRC Foundation for Cancer Research and the Telethon Foundation, focusing on innovative therapies for cancer and rare diseases. Attendees can expect deep dives into AI’s potential to revolutionize healthcare, as well as a focus on biohightech innovations from European companies operating at the cutting edge of biotechnology, bioinformatics, and biomedical fields.
The Intersection of Ethics, AI, and Industry
One of the key highlights of this year’s festival will be the “Businesses and AI” series, offering an industry-focused look at how artificial intelligence is poised to transform sectors like communications, administration, and human resources. This series, taking place on September 27 and 28, will bring together business leaders, entrepreneurs, and European researchers to explore the economic and societal implications of AI integration.
In addition, the EuroBioHighTech 2024 program will bring attention to the role of companies specializing in biotechnology and biomedical sciences, offering attendees a rare opportunity to learn about emerging trends from leaders in the field.
Engaging the Next Generation of Scientists
While AI and cutting-edge research dominate the agenda, Trieste Next has something for all ages. The festival’s Schools Program aims to engage students with science through interactive workshops, treasure hunts for extraterrestrial life, and “mathematical concerts” designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and researchers.
A major highlight for younger attendees will be the European Researchers’ Night on September 27, a celebration featuring science-themed games and quizzes, aimed at bringing scientific concepts to life.
A City at the Heart of European Science
Trieste, long celebrated as a city of knowledge, is home to several prestigious scientific institutions, including the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) and the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics. The festival, co-promoted by the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, is a testament to the city’s commitment to fostering scientific inquiry and innovation.
As in previous years, the festival’s lineup will also include English-language programming, underscoring Trieste’s role as a European hub for scientific collaboration. This bilingual approach ensures that researchers from across Europe can participate in what has become one of the continent’s most respected forums for scientific dialogue.
Recognizing Excellence in Science Communication
For the second consecutive year, Trieste Next will conclude with the prestigious Science Book of the Year award, which celebrates outstanding work in scientific communication. Following last year’s win by Francesca Grazioli for her book Carnivorous Capitalism, this year’s winner will be announced on September 29.
