The Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi has announced its 2024 Symphony Season, promising an eclectic and captivating lineup that spans from classical stalwarts to rare, modern works. Running from September 15 to December 22, the season will feature eight concerts, including two special performances as part of the Trieste Festival, in collaboration with the Società dei Concerti.
The season opens on September 15 with celebrated cellist and conductor Giovanni Sollima, who will perform both Franz Joseph Haydn‘s works and his own composition, Folktales. The Teatro Verdi Orchestra will take center stage, setting the tone for a season marked by its diverse programming.
Following this, on September 18, Will Humburg will conduct the orchestra in Sergei Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3, featuring the distinguished Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky. The evening also includes Antonín Dvořák’sSymphony No. 9, known as “From the New World.”
The subscription series begins on September 27 with Hans Graf conducting a program that includes Édouard Lalo’sSymphonie espagnole and Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. Violinist Sergej Krylov will be the evening’s soloist.
October 5 will see conductor Hartmut Haenchen lead a program of Johannes Brahms‘ Double Concerto and Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 4. Violinist Stefan Milenkovich and cellist Ettore Pagano will join the orchestra for these performances.
On October 11, the spotlight turns to modernist rarities with conductor Tommaso Turchetta leading the orchestra in Cesare Barison’s Three Lyrical Moments, Sandro Fuga’s Toccata, and Luigi Dallapiccola’s Five Fragments from Sappho. The evening will conclude with Igor Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms.
Enrico Calesso will conduct two significant concerts: on October 18, the program will feature Richard Wagner’sPrelude and Isolde’s Love Death, Ferruccio Busoni’s Violin Concerto, and symphonic poems by Richard Strauss. On November 23, Calesso will lead the orchestra in Richard Strauss’s Oboe Concerto and Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7, with oboist François Leleux.
The season concludes with a special performance of Giacomo Puccini’s Messa di Gloria on December 22, conducted by Jordi Bernàcer. The concert will feature tenor Riccardo Massi and baritone Markus Werba, alongside the Teatro Verdi Orchestra and Chorus, in collaboration with the FVG Orchestra and Choir of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Paolo Rodda, Artistic Director of the Teatro Verdi, expressed enthusiasm for the season’s ambitious repertoire. “Our orchestra’s energy and curiosity allow us to tackle both rare and well-loved works with passion,” he said. “We look forward to growing with our audience and continuing to offer unique musical experiences.”
Music Director Enrico Calesso also shared his excitement, particularly about exploring Richard Strauss and Busoni’s works. “It’s a great honor to delve into these composers’ masterpieces,” Calesso noted.
Giuliano Polo, Superintendent of the Teatro Verdi, emphasized the season’s goal to reconnect with the community. “We are eager to rebuild our audience and reinforce the cultural reputation of Trieste,” Polo said.
