More than 1,500 people have signed a petition calling for a public debate on the future of Porto Vecchio, a historic waterfront area in Trieste. The petition, launched by local entrepreneur Federico Pacorini, advocates for a formal discussion involving the community, in line with Italy’s Public Works Code.
Supporters of the initiative argue that the redevelopment of Porto Vecchio should involve broader public input, given the area’s significance to the city’s heritage and future. The site, once a major industrial port, has been largely dormant for years, and its potential revitalization has generated both interest and debate.
“This is an opportunity to involve the entire city in shaping its future,” Pacorini said.
Members of the political group Adesso Trieste and opposition parties within the town council have expressed support for the petition, emphasizing the importance of transparency and public engagement in the decision-making process.
Council Session Set to Discuss Porto Vecchio
In response to the growing interest, opposition groups have requested a discussion on Porto Vecchio during a town council session scheduled for Monday, September 16, at 6:00 PM. The session will take place in the council chamber at Piazza Unità d’Italia and will be open to the public.
The petition’s backers hope the session will lead to a formal public debate on the redevelopment plans. While the Public Works Code provides a framework for such procedures, the decision to proceed will ultimately depend on city leadership.
Porto Vecchio’s redevelopment has sparked differing opinions within the community. Some residents see the project as an opportunity to stimulate the local economy, while others express concerns about preserving the area’s historical character.
