This week, the University of Trieste will mark its 100th anniversary with an ambitious event titled “100 Steps Forward – Talk and Dance.” The celebration, set for Friday, September 20, promises to be a day of intellectual discussion and lively festivity, bringing together academia, students, and the local community in a unique blend of scholarship and entertainment.

The centenary event, organized in collaboration with Trieste Trasporti, kicks off at 5:00 PM at the university’s Piazzale Europa campus. Academic experts will lead a series of talks focused on sustainable mobility as part of the European Mobility Week initiative. The talks will take place in the Aula Magna of Building H3 and will be moderated by journalist Micol Brusaferro.

Among the highlights, Guido Caldarelli, a physicist from Venice’s Ca’ Foscari University, will address the future of cities through the lens of complexity and digital twins. Alessandro Massi Pavan, from the University of Trieste’s energy and transport research center, will delve into the synergy between renewable energy and electric mobility. Physicist and designer Tommaso Gecchelin will outline a visionary new model of urban mobility, while Petra Gregori and Giacomo Negro of the Audace Sailing Team will emphasize sustainability from the perspective of their sea-based endeavors. Finally, the UniTS Racing Team will present their insights on how their work on the racetrack is advancing the future of everyday mobility.

In addition to the intellectual discussions, the university will present awards to outstanding students and athletes, recognizing academic excellence and sporting achievements.

As day transitions into night, the mood will shift toward celebration. At 8:00 PM, the steps of Piazzale Europa 1 will transform into a dance floor, with renowned DJs Tommy Vee and Albert Marzinotto headlining an open-air set. The DJ set is free to attend, though entry will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Adding a technological touch to the festivities, CAMPUSX S.r.l. will offer participants the chance to explore CX Trieste apartments using Oculus virtual reality headsets. Meanwhile, Trieste Trasporti will provide a shuttle service to facilitate student participation in the evening’s celebrations.

The event comes at a time of reflection and renewal for the University of Trieste, which has played a central role in the academic and cultural life of northeastern Italy since its founding in 1924. Over the years, it has established itself as a hub for innovation, with strong research programs in energy, mobility, and environmental sustainability.

As the university looks toward its next 100 years, “100 Steps Forward” symbolizes both a celebration of the past and a nod to the future—honoring a century of achievements while engaging with the pressing issues of tomorrow.
