This Friday, the Civic Museum of Antiquities “J.J. Winckelmann” will transform into a vibrant tapestry of Roman history as it kicks off the 2024 edition of “Legiomania,” a three-day experimental archaeology event.
From September 20 to 22, visitors will be transported back to the 2nd century Antonine period, immersing themselves in the rich history of the ancient city of Tergeste. The event, a staple in Trieste’s cultural calendar, is set to offer an interactive exploration of Roman military life, complete with detailed reenactments and historical displays.
Marzia Vidulli, the cultural official and curator of the Winckelmann Museum, announced the event at a press conference this morning, noting the growing popularity of “Legiomania.” “We are excited to present this eighth edition of ‘Legiomania,’” Vidulli said. “The ‘Legio I Italica,’ with their extensive expertise, will set up a Roman camp in our Captain’s Garden, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to witness and understand the intricacies of Roman military equipment and life.”
The museum’s garden will host a replica Roman camp where the “Legio I Italica” will showcase the construction of helmets, shields, and other military gear. Attendees can engage with craftsmen, view demonstrations, and even handle replicas of historical weapons. The immersive experience extends beyond military life, offering insights into Roman daily activities, including food, training, and gladiatorial combat.
In addition to the main event, “Legiomania” will feature gladiatorial performances organized by “Ars Dimicandi” of Villa d’Adda. These shows promise not only high-level combat but also expert narrations, bringing the dramatic essence of Roman gladiatorial games to life. The group’s extensive experience ensures that the performances are both spectacular and educational.
For families, special activities such as the “Little Legionaries” path and the “Build Your Mosaic” workshop are designed to engage younger audiences and provide a hands-on historical experience. Two parades of legionaries will also take place on Saturday and Sunday mornings, traveling through the pedestrian areas of Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia and Piazza della Borsa, offering live combat demonstrations and historical simulations.
“Legiomania” is more than just an event; it’s a bridge to the past, allowing modern audiences to experience the grandeur of ancient Rome in an accessible and engaging format. As Trieste continues to attract history enthusiasts from around the world, “Legiomania” stands out as a highlight of the city’s cultural offerings.
