Intense winds from the bora, a powerful northeast wind characteristic of the Adriatic Sea, have forced the suspension of a cruise ship’s departure from the port of Trieste on Thursday. Despite several attempts to maneuver the vessel with the assistance of four tugboats, maritime authorities made the decision to keep the ship moored at the dock to ensure the safety of passengers and infrastructure.

The cruise ship, docked at Berth 29 of the maritime station, was preparing to set sail when the high winds began sweeping through the region. Trieste’s Capitaneria di Porto (Port Authority) and the Guardia Costiera (Coast Guard) swiftly implemented reinforced technical-nautical services, commonly used in severe weather, to support ongoing commercial operations.

However, after multiple failed attempts to safely navigate the ship out of port, maritime officials determined it was in the best interest of safety to keep the vessel securely moored until conditions improved. “The ship remains in full safety,” a spokesperson for the Port Authority said, “as we await the reduction in wind speed.”

The Guardia Costiera of Trieste has maintained round-the-clock monitoring of port activities via its operations center and advanced ship tracking systems. “We are closely observing the situation to ensure the safety of all vessels in the port and nearby waters, and to support the continued commercial operations of the maritime terminal,” officials noted.

The bora winds, which can reach speeds of over 100 km/h (62 mph), are not uncommon in Trieste, often disrupting shipping and port activities. This latest incident highlights the challenges faced by the region’s maritime industry during seasonal bouts of severe weather.
