The Barcolana 56, the world’s largest sailing regatta, took place this week in the Gulf of Trieste, blending elite competition with a focus on social inclusion and community impact. Over 2,000 sailors participated, including celebrated figures like Giovanni Soldini and Olympic gold medalist Caterina Banti, who joined forces to raise awareness for Emergency, an international NGO providing medical aid in war zones.
This year’s event emphasized Parasailing, with a record number of participants from the Barcolana per il Socialeinitiative, which promotes inclusivity in sports. Disabled and able-bodied sailors competed side by side, underscoring the event’s commitment to breaking down barriers in the world of competitive sailing. “Sailing should have no limits,” said Hanna Stodel, Para World Sailing Manager, during a conference on inclusion aimed at reintegrating sailing into the Paralympic Games.
Barcolana also highlighted the next generation of sailors through the Follow Me project, with students from local nautical institutes gaining hands-on experience in managing the mooring of over 600 boats. Additionally, students from the Smile @ Me initiative documented the event, bringing a Gen Z perspective to one of Europe’s most iconic maritime gatherings.
As the event continues to grow, its core mission remains the same: blending sport, solidarity, and social change.
