The region of Friuli Venezia Giulia has launched a new vaccination campaign to combat both COVID-19 and seasonal flu as the winter months approach. Regional Governor Massimiliano Fedriga and Health Councillor Riccardo Riccardi urged residents to get vaccinated, citing the importance of protecting public health and reducing hospitalizations.
“This campaign is about making sure people understand the importance of vaccination,” Fedriga said at a press conference in Trieste on Monday. He emphasized that vaccines, tested on millions of cases worldwide, are safe and crucial for protecting high-risk populations.
The campaign, titled “Let’s Protect Ourselves,” aims to address the growing concern over both viruses, which officials say could strain the region’s healthcare system. The flu, particularly dangerous for the elderly and those with underlying conditions, remains a significant public health risk each winter.
Fedriga urged all residents to get vaccinated against the flu, while recommending the COVID-19 booster primarily for those over 60 or with pre-existing health conditions. He also highlighted the importance of healthcare workers getting vaccinated to set an example.
“It is wrong to believe in misinformation,” he said, calling for trust in official scientific studies. Health officials have expressed concern over vaccine fatigue following the pandemic, but Fedriga emphasized the need for continued participation to prevent serious health complications.
The regional health system will facilitate access to vaccines for healthcare workers, blood donors, and high-risk groups, as authorities push for strong public adherence to the campaign.
