The historic city of Trieste, renowned for its blend of Austro-Hungarian and Mediterranean charm, is ushering in the holiday season with its much-anticipated Christmas markets. Unveiled during a press conference on Tuesday, November 26, the traditional city center market will be accompanied for the first time by a new addition in the neighborhood of Roiano, expanding the festive cheer across the city.

In a packed Sala Giunta, Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, joined by Deputy Mayor Serena Tonel and key representatives from Trieste’s business and civic sectors, presented a comprehensive lineup of holiday activities designed to captivate both residents and visitors. “Years ago, we traveled to Salzburg to experience Christmas markets. Today, we welcome tourists from Austria here,” Mayor Dipiazza said. He reflected on the magic of lighting the Christmas tree in Piazza Unità d’Italia, noting how the illuminated square, visible even from incoming cruise ships, showcases the city’s allure.

Deputy Mayor Tonel emphasized the collaborative effort behind the markets, highlighting their significance as part of the city’s broader “Christmas package,” which includes cultural events, festive decorations, and new initiatives in multiple neighborhoods. “We’re creating a city-wide holiday atmosphere that invites visitors to explore not only the historic center but also areas like Roiano,” Tonel said.

The centerpiece of Trieste’s celebrations, the central Christmas Market, runs from December 8 to January 6, transforming the area from Via delle Torri to Piazza della Borsa into a bustling wonderland. Around 70 wooden stalls will feature a variety of artisanal goods, gourmet delicacies, and unique holiday gifts from 11 countries, including Austria, Slovenia, and Tunisia. A special inauguration ceremony on December 8 will include a procession by the Swedish Santa Lucia Choir, culminating in a ribbon-cutting event in Piazza della Borsa, attended by the Swedish ambassador to Italy and local dignitaries.

For the first time, Roiano will host its own Christmas Market in Piazza Tra i Rivi from December 16 to 24. With ten stalls offering local crafts and festive treats, the event promises to create a community-centric holiday experience. Supported by the local administration and the “Roiano for All” association, the initiative aims to invigorate the neighborhood’s economic and social life.

Both markets will offer more than shopping. Visitors to the central market can enjoy street performances, children’s activities, and festive photo opportunities. Two carousels and an ice skating rink add to the seasonal charm, while a dedicated space in Piazza della Borsa will showcase sustainable projects, including recycling initiatives by AcegasApsAmga, the city’s waste management company.

Trieste’s emphasis on sustainability and community extends to its partnerships with local nonprofits. Over 40 organizations will rotate through two dedicated stalls, sharing their missions and selling handmade goods to support their causes.

Other initiatives include the “Natale in Vetrina” competition, encouraging local shopkeepers to decorate their storefronts in festive themes. Shoppers and a jury will vote for the most enchanting displays, with prizes for the winners, including tickets to the city’s New Year’s gala performance. Antonio Paoletti, president of Trieste’s Confcommercio, lauded the markets’ growing reputation, noting their inclusion in the Alpe-Adria network of Christmas markets. “These events not only attract visitors but also enrich the city’s economy by supporting local businesses and artisans,” he said.

With its vibrant holiday offerings, Trieste is positioning itself as a year-round destination. “A well-planned calendar of events like these can help us attract tourists beyond the peak summer months,” Paoletti added. As the markets open their doors, Trieste’s combination of tradition, innovation, and community spirit ensures this year’s festive season will leave a lasting impression on all who visit.
