The hauntingly romantic ballet Giselle will grace the stage of the Sala Assicurazioni Generali on December 2, marking the beginning of the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia’s cherished holiday tradition: December performances of classical ballets.

Presented by the acclaimed Moscow Ballet under the artistic direction of Evgeniya Bespalova, this poetic production breathes new life into the 1841 masterpiece set to the music of Adolph-Charles Adam and choreographed by Jean Coralli. The ensemble, known for its impeccable training and youthful vigor, is composed of standout talents from Russia’s most esteemed dance academies.

A Tale of Love and Redemption

Giselle weaves a story of love, betrayal, and forgiveness. The first act unfolds in a pastoral village where the titular heroine is swept into a romance with the disguised Prince Albrecht, unaware of his betrothal to another. The act’s joyous dances, including the intricate pas de deux des paysans and a sweeping waltz, reflect the euphoria of newfound love. But this bliss is short-lived. Giselle’s world shatters when Albrecht’s deception is revealed, culminating in her heartbreaking demise in a final, desperate dance.

The second act takes a spectral turn, as Albrecht visits Giselle’s grave and encounters the Wilis, spirits of women who died of broken hearts. Among them is Giselle, whose enduring love shields Albrecht from the Wilis’ vengeful dance. Their poignant reunion—highlighted by an iconic arabesque where Giselle hovers protectively over Albrecht—culminates in a pas de deux celebrated as one of the most exquisite in classical ballet. As dawn breaks, Giselle returns to the spirit realm, leaving Albrecht alive but forever transformed by her love.

A Festive Tradition

The Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia has long made December synonymous with classical ballet, and this year’s production promises to enchant audiences with its emotional depth and technical brilliance. The Moscow Ballet, a frequent guest of the theater, is renowned for its seamless blend of rigorous technique and evocative artistry, a hallmark of Bespalova’s direction.
