In a significant step toward sustainable urban transport, Gorizia has unveiled eight new electric buses for its public transit system, marking a milestone in the region’s commitment to green technology. The launch comes at a pivotal moment for the city, which is gearing up to co-host the European Capital of Culture in 2025 alongside its neighboring city, Nova Gorica in Slovenia.
Cristina Amirante, the Regional Councillor for Infrastructure and Territory in Friuli Venezia Giulia, announced the new fleet during a presentation held earlier today. She emphasized that the electric buses will not only help reduce environmental impact but also serve as a symbol of the region’s dedication to sustainability and regional cooperation. The new vehicles will be part of a larger project to create the first fully zero-emission regional urban cross-border public transport service between Italy and Slovenia.
“By 2030, the Friuli Venezia Giulia region plans to operate a fleet of 174 electric buses, 25 hydrogen-powered vehicles, and 328 gas-powered buses,” said Amirante. “This is a bold step toward reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transport options for the future.”
The electric buses will be used on a cross-border route connecting Gorizia’s train and bus stations with Nova Gorica’s airport. The service will run without restrictions for passengers on either side of the border, offering frequent, sustainable transport in preparation for the European Capital of Culture events in 2025. In addition to the buses, charging stations have been set up to ensure the efficiency of the new fleet.
The launch event was attended by several local dignitaries, including Gorizia Mayor Rodolfo Ziberna, Nova Gorica Deputy Mayor Tomaz Horvat, and the president of Atp Gorizia, Caterina Belletti. Fr. Manuel Ulombe, of the Franciscan Friars of Gorizia, blessed the new buses, adding a ceremonial touch to the event.
For Gorizia, the addition of these electric buses is not just about modernizing its transport infrastructure. The vehicles, which feature a unique GO!2025 livery inspired by the colors of the Isonzo River, will also serve as moving billboards for the region’s cultural heritage as it prepares for the prestigious European event.
The electric buses are part of a broader, 220-million-euro investment in public transport across Friuli Venezia Giulia. The project includes the expansion of services, enhanced frequencies, and the integration of hydrogen and electric vehicles into both urban and extra-urban transport systems.
As Gorizia and Nova Gorica prepare for their role as European Capitals of Culture, this initiative reflects the growing commitment of the region to innovative and environmentally conscious solutions. The new buses represent not only progress in terms of technology and sustainability but also an effort to strengthen cross-border ties between Italy and Slovenia, fostering a deeper sense of regional unity.
