On Thursday morning, the Municipality of Trieste and utility company AcegasApsAmga revealed a sweeping redevelopment plan for Via Romagna, an important residential thoroughfare in the city center. The project, announced during a press conference at the City Council Hall, aims to address long-standing infrastructure issues while modernizing the area for future generations.

Via Romagna, known for its steep incline and dense population, has faced numerous challenges over the years, including uneven road surfaces, aging underground utilities, and frequent emergency repairs. The upcoming initiative seeks to provide a comprehensive solution, replacing outdated systems with modern, safer materials and enhancing the street’s overall functionality and appearance.

The redevelopment will encompass nearly half a kilometer of roadway and involves the replacement of gray cast iron gas pipelines with high-density polyethylene tubing, upgrades to the water, sewage, and electrical networks, and the complete resurfacing of the road and sidewalks. Preparatory work conducted in the summers of 2023 and 2024 has laid the groundwork for the ambitious undertaking, which is scheduled to begin in January 2025 and last approximately 18 months.

“This street has required 11 emergency water network repairs in the past five years alone, and electricity demand in the area has also grown significantly,” noted Giovanni Piccoli, Director of Networks at AcegasApsAmga, during the event. “This redevelopment is essential to ensure the safety and reliability of services for residents.”

To minimize disruptions, the project will be executed in phases, with construction teams working on small sections of the road at a time. While the Municipality and AcegasApsAmga have acknowledged the potential inconvenience for local residents, they emphasized that the long-term benefits—including increased safety and service continuity—will outweigh the temporary challenges.

Via Romagna’s redevelopment comes at a time when Trieste is investing in the modernization of its infrastructure to meet evolving urban needs. The decision to take a holistic approach, rather than relying on piecemeal fixes, reflects a broader effort to future-proof the city’s infrastructure while improving the quality of life for its residents.

Completion is anticipated by August 2026, marking a significant milestone in the city’s ongoing urban renewal efforts.
