This Saturday, St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City will host the grand unveiling of a unique Nativity scene, a stunning representation of the lagoon of Grado, an area renowned for its cultural and natural beauty. The event, set for 6:30 PM, marks a significant moment for the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, as the artwork is unveiled in the heart of Christianity’s most sacred site.

A delegation of approximately 400 people will gather for the occasion, led by Archbishop Carlo Maria Redaelli of Gorizia, Mayor Giuseppe Corbatto of Grado, and Don Paolo Nutarelli, the local parish priest. Antonio Boemo, the initiative’s promoter, will also attend the ceremony. The delegation’s trip to Rome will culminate in a rare meeting with Pope Francis, who will receive the group at the Vatican.

The nativity scene itself, spanning about 30 meters, will remain on display throughout the holiday season, drawing attention not only for its depiction of the Grado lagoon but for its contribution to Italy’s rich tradition of nativity art. It represents a blending of the country’s cultural heritage with the universal spirit of Christmas, showcasing a regional landscape intertwined with Christian history.

Among the delegation will be the Banda Civica of Grado, whose musical performance will add a festive tone to the occasion, resonating throughout the grandeur of St. Peter’s Square. The orchestra’s participation offers a unique opportunity to celebrate Grado’s cultural contributions on a global stage.

As the nativity scene lights up St. Peter’s Square, the event promises to become a poignant symbol of the enduring ties between Italy’s local traditions and the universal message of the Christmas season.
