On Friday, the Luigi Einaudi Foundation and the University of Trieste marked a historic moment in the city’s cultural and academic calendar with the conference Luigi Einaudi, the President of the Miracle. The event celebrated the 150th anniversary of Einaudi’s birth and the 70th anniversary of his honorary degree from the university, while also serving as the 99th event in a year-long celebration of the University of Trieste’s 100th anniversary.

Held at the university’s Piazzale Europa campus, the event attracted a distinguished audience, including university officials, political leaders, and academics. Sponsored by the Municipality of Trieste and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, it underscored the enduring legacy of Einaudi, who served as Italy’s first elected president and is remembered as a key architect of the country’s post-war recovery.

The highlight of the event was a screening of the documentary Il Presidente del miracolo (The President of the Miracle), produced by the Einaudi Foundation and directed by filmmaker Pupi Avati. The documentary explores Einaudi’s transformative role in Italy’s political and economic resurgence after World War II, offering a window into his profound influence on modern Italy.

Among those in attendance were Andrea Cangini, Secretary General of the Luigi Einaudi Foundation; Roberto Di Lenarda, Magnificent Rector of the University of Trieste; Donata Vianelli, Director of the DEAMS Department at the University of Trieste; Maurizio De Blasio, Councillor for Education and Family Policies for the Municipality of Trieste; and Francesco Magris, Professor of Economic Policy at the University of Trieste. The event was moderated by Fabrizio Brancoli, Deputy Director of the Nem Group with oversight of Il Piccolo, Trieste’s leading newspaper.

This event not only honored the legacy of Einaudi but also tied into the broader celebrations marking the centenary of the University of Trieste, which has played a central role in fostering academic excellence in the region. As the city continues its year-long centennial celebrations, today’s conference provided a poignant reminder of Einaudi’s lasting influence on both the university and the nation.
