It’s the season of reindeer, mistletoe, and Christmas trees, but how much do we really know about the natural world that inspires these festive icons? This year, visitors to the Civic Museum of Natural History in Trieste are in for a holiday treat that goes beyond the tinsel and lights.
On Saturday, December 14, at 11 a.m., the museum will host Natural Christmas Stories, a guided walk through its exhibits led by Nicola Bressi, the museum’s curator, naturalist, and zoologist. Part of the popular Passeggiando s’impara(Learning Through Walking) series, this event offers a unique perspective on the natural history behind some of Christmas’s most beloved symbols.
“It’s a chance to explore the extraordinary stories of the animals, plants, and natural phenomena that are part of our holiday traditions,” Mr. Bressi explained in a recent interview. “For instance, the reindeer and camel are not just Christmas characters—they have fascinating ecological and cultural histories.”
During the walk, visitors will learn why moss and mistletoe have become staples of festive décor, how the humble sheep influenced ancient rituals, and what makes the Christmas star an enduring celestial symbol. Mr. Bressi promises a lively narrative that combines zoology, botany, and folklore, all set against the backdrop of the museum’s extensive collection.
