This December, the 30th Ave Ninchi International Festival of Theater in the Dialects of Triveneto and Istria will take place in Trieste, celebrating linguistic and cultural heritage. Organized by L’Armonia APS, a collective of local theater companies, the festival pays tribute to Ave Ninchi, a celebrated Italian actress and honorary president of the organization until her passing.

Held at the Sala Luttazzi in Porto Vecchio from December 13–28, the festival features performances in Venetian, Triestine, and Istrian dialects by amateur theater groups from Trieste, Rovigo, Treviso, and Umag. Highlights include the charity performance Meio Soli! on December 20, with proceeds benefiting a local disability advocacy group.

This year’s program includes:

  • Teatrino for Schools (Dec. 13): A workshop introducing local students to dialectal theater.
  • Dramatic Performances: Including Tra Moglie e Marì No Ste Meterme a Mi (Triestine comedy, Dec. 13) and Donna Canasta (Polesian drama, Dec. 14).
  • Salotto Giotti (Dec. 21): A literary and theatrical exploration of Triestine dialect traditions.

Vice Mayor Serena Tonel emphasized the festival’s role in preserving local heritage and fostering cultural exchange. “This milestone event highlights the richness of our dialects and strengthens Trieste’s position as a cultural hub,” she said.

Tickets are available at local box offices, with several events free of charge. The festival continues its mission to preserve dialects and bridge cultural divides through the universal language of theater.
