A new chapter in Italy’s tradition of communal giving has arrived in Trieste, as the city embraces the “suspended meal” initiative, a solidarity project born from a partnership between Rotary and Caritas. Inspired by Naples’ beloved “suspended coffee” tradition—where customers leave a prepaid coffee for someone in need—the initiative extends this practice to meals, providing a tangible way for residents and visitors to contribute to those facing economic hardship.
Under the program, customers dining at participating restaurants can donate either 2 or 5 euros, which will be entirely passed on to Caritas, the Catholic charity that supports Trieste’s most vulnerable residents. The charity is currently helping 2,800 people, and the need continues to grow, especially as winter approaches.
Since the launch, around ten local bars and restaurants have joined the cause. Any restaurant wishing to participate can easily add its name to the list by emailing info@pastosospesotrieste.it.
The suspended meal concept is not new to Rotary, having already proven successful in other Italian cities like Monza and Cremona—the latter being the hometown of Trieste’s own Bishop Enrico Trevisi. In just one year, these cities raised 32,000 euros, equivalent to 6,000 suspended meals, illustrating the profound impact of this simple yet effective initiative.
Trieste’s adaptation of the project is a timely response to the city’s rising demand for social assistance, with Caritas reporting a notable increase in requests for help. Vera Pellegrino, Head of Promotion and Training at Caritas Trieste, notes that the generosity of local businesses and diners has already made a noticeable difference in the community.
Alessandro Zanmarchi, President of the Rotary Club of Trieste, called the initiative a beacon of hope, emphasizing how small acts of kindness can lead to significant change.
Bishop Enrico Trevisi, who has witnessed the success of similar programs in his hometown, echoed these sentiments. “In times of difficulty, it’s essential to remember that every meal shared is a moment of solidarity, a reflection of our shared humanity.”
As the initiative continues to grow, it stands as a testament to the power of community action, bringing together Trieste’s residents in a collective effort to support their neighbors in need. With winter fast approaching, the “suspended meal” initiative is poised to offer both nourishment and hope to those who need it most.
