On December 19, the quiet Karst village of Opicina, just outside Trieste, will host the latest edition of its monthly market, A Well of Opportunities. Organized by the cultural association Cose di Vecchie Case, this special Christmas edition promises a festive display of antiques, vintage finds, and artisanal crafts. Entry to the event is free, and it will run from 8 a.m. until sunset, weather permitting.

The market has become a cherished fixture in Opicina, taking place every third Thursday of the month in partnership with the Municipality of Trieste. Aimed at revitalizing the village and attracting visitors from across the region, the event serves as both a celebration of local heritage and an economic boost for businesses in the area.

A Seasonal Showcase

This month’s edition will see exhibitors lining the sidewalks of Via Nazionale, Strada per Vienna, and Via di Prosecco, offering a variety of items from vintage vinyl records and comics to handcrafted holiday décor. Visitors can expect to find unique gifts, including collectibles and memorabilia that appeal to enthusiasts and curious shoppers alike. Many of the offerings are tailored specifically for the festive season, reflecting a blend of creativity and tradition.

The market will also feature a dedicated Children’s Island, where young attendees can trade toys, stickers, books, and other items, fostering a spirit of sharing and community.

Historical Significance

The market’s name, A Well of Opportunities, pays homage to the area’s rich history. It is situated near the Zinzendorf Stele, a monument commemorating the Commercial Road envisioned by Karl von Zinzendorf, governor of Trieste from 1776 to 1782. This ambitious trade route linked Trieste to Vienna via the Karst, creating a vital connection that also included modern-day Slovenia and Italy. A stone wellhead from the era, originally part of a postal station in Opicina, now resides at Trieste’s Orto Lapidario, serving as a reminder of the village’s historical importance.

Local Impact

By drawing residents and tourists alike, the market underscores its role as more than just a shopping destination. It provides a platform for artisans, hobbyists, and antique dealers to showcase their work while simultaneously encouraging economic activity in the village. The festive atmosphere is expected to draw crowds from Trieste and beyond, offering an engaging way to experience the region’s culture and history.
