The long-awaited return of the iconic Trieste-Opicina Tram is now a reality. ANSFISA, Italy’s National Agency for the Safety of Railways and Road Infrastructure, has officially granted approval for the tram’s restart following a final round of safety inspections.

Early this morning, agency technicians conducted a comprehensive assessment of the historic tram line, along with its vintage carriages, and issued the necessary authorization to resume service. The green light comes after extensive restoration and safety enhancements carried out under the supervision of the Municipality of Trieste.

“The work has met all required standards, and we are pleased to see this piece of Trieste’s heritage ready to roll again,” a spokesperson for ANSFISA said in a statement.

Starting tomorrow, the tram will operate in a pre-service phase lasting approximately ten days. During this period, test runs will ensure the system’s full functionality under real-world conditions. Trieste Trasporti, the city’s public transportation operator, will then coordinate with local authorities to determine the official launch date for passenger service.

The Trieste-Opicina Tram, a unique hybrid between a tram and a funicular railway, has long been a symbol of the city’s engineering ingenuity and cultural identity. Its picturesque route climbs steeply from the Adriatic coastline to the Karst Plateau, offering breathtaking views of the city and surrounding landscape.

The tram’s return marks a significant milestone for the city, which has faced delays and challenges in restoring the line after it was suspended for safety reasons several years ago. Local residents and tourists alike have eagerly anticipated the comeback of this beloved mode of transportation, which is not just a means of travel but an enduring emblem of Trieste’s historic charm.

“This tram is more than just public transport,” said a local historian. “It’s a living memory of Trieste’s unique character and a testament to its enduring connection with its past.”

As final preparations are underway, the city looks forward to welcoming back an essential piece of its cultural and transport legacy. For now, all eyes are on the tram as it gears up to reclaim its rightful place on Trieste’s steep, storied tracks.
