The Municipality of Trieste has announced a temporary suspension of its popular “Water Stations” service starting January 1, 2025. These public water distribution kiosks, a staple for eco-conscious residents seeking convenient and affordable access to drinking water, will cease operations as the city prepares to relaunch the service under a new concession.

The shutdown comes with a clear call to action for current users: any remaining credit on the reusable water cards must be used by December 31, 2024. Municipal officials caution that the existing cards may not be compatible with the new system to be introduced in the coming months.

In addition to utilizing remaining balances, users are advised to return their cards to authorized vendors for a deposit refund. The city has assured residents that card vendors will remain available for approximately one week following the suspension of the service, providing ample opportunity for returns and refunds.

For those who miss this initial deadline or hold cards with remaining credit, the service provider, ProAcqua, will manage refunds directly. Users can reach the company through the “Contact” section of its website, www.proacquagroup.com.

The “Water Stations” initiative has been lauded for its environmental benefits, offering a sustainable alternative to bottled water and reducing plastic waste. The temporary interruption raises questions about how the new concession will enhance or expand the program to meet growing demand while maintaining its green mission.

City officials have not yet disclosed the timeline or specifics for the revamped service but have expressed confidence in its future potential. As residents prepare for this brief hiatus, the Municipality encourages them to stay informed and make use of the resources provided to ensure a smooth transition.

What’s Next for Trieste’s Water Stations?
The relaunch, slated for early 2025, represents an opportunity for the city to modernize its approach to water distribution. Whether this will include technological upgrades, expanded access, or additional features remains to be seen, but the community’s engagement and feedback will likely play a role in shaping the future of this valued service.
