For nearly three decades, the northern Italian city of Trieste has roared to life every December with the thrum of motorcycles and the cheers of children, as the beloved charity event San Nicolò si mette in moto unfolds. This year’s 28th edition proved to be a resounding success, raising over €28,000 to support underprivileged children in the community.

More than half of the funds—€12,500—were immediately allocated to practical purchases, benefitting local associations and foster homes. Baby formula, fresh produce, hygiene products, cookware, bedding, stationery, and even a few sofas were delivered to those in need. As tradition dictates, part of the funds also went toward toys, which Saint Nicholas himself distributed to delighted children on Saturday, December 7, accompanied by an entourage of motorcyclists who form the event’s iconic procession.

The remaining €16,000 was donated to three key organizations: Agmen, Io Tifo Sveva, and I Bambini Del Danubio, ensuring continued support for children and families in challenging circumstances.

Since its inception 28 years ago, the event has become a cherished tradition in Trieste. “It’s a beautiful, joyful, and deeply moving display of generosity,” said Caterina de Gavardo, the city’s Councillor for Urban Safety Policies. “The sight of motorcycles snaking through the streets, the gifts, and the children’s smiles are the most rewarding results we could hope for.”

Preparations for the event begin weeks in advance, spearheaded by the Roberto Tommasi Recreational Club of the Local Police. Collections are organized not only among law enforcement but also across workplaces and community groups. This year’s efforts included a spirited futsal tournament featuring 15 teams vying for the top prize. The Guardia di Finanza claimed victory, followed by the Local Police of Trieste and the Slovenian Police team, SD Centaver.

Local businesses and shops, alongside numerous motorcycle groups, played a pivotal role in the initiative. Additional funds were raised through the sale of San Nicolò merchandise at a market set up in the city’s Le Torri d’Europa shopping center.

As the motorcycle convoy wound through the city streets, accompanied by cheers from onlookers, it was clear that the event was about more than just financial contributions. It was a celebration of community, kindness, and the enduring spirit of giving.

For Trieste, San Nicolò si mette in moto is not merely a tradition—it’s a testament to the power of collective goodwill and a reminder that even the roar of engines can carry the sound of hope.
