In the spirit of the season, museums across Italy’s Friuli Venezia Giulia region are offering visitors an array of festive opportunities, including extended hours, guided tours, and special exhibits, thanks to an initiative by the Ministry of Culture.

The Historical Museum and Park of Miramare Castle, perched on a promontory overlooking the Gulf of Trieste, invites visitors to explore Naturae, a contemporary art exhibition staged in the castle’s stables. The castle will be open on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., while the park will adhere to its seasonal schedule, closing at 4 p.m. daily.

In the nearby town of Aquileia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient Roman ruins, the National Archaeological Museum of Aquileia has unveiled newly restored storage spaces for public viewing. Guided tours, led by the archaeologists behind the project, will delve into the intricacies of collection curation and the challenges faced during the museum’s recent overhaul. These exclusive tours are scheduled for December 29 at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., December 30 at 3:30 p.m., and January 2 at 3:30 p.m. Reservations can be made via email at museoaquileiaeventi@cultura.gov.it or by calling 0431 91016.

The Aquileia museum will operate daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the final entry at 6 p.m., and will feature special openings on December 30 and January 1 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., as well as on January 6 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Further afield in the medieval town of Cividale del Friuli, the National Archaeological Museum of Cividale is welcoming visitors to its rich collection of Lombard artifacts with regular hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Exceptionally, the museum will also open on Monday, January 6, 2025. For details, visitors can reach out via phone at 0432 700 700 or email museoarcheocividale@cultura.gov.it.

As Friuli Venezia Giulia ushers in the New Year, these initiatives promise an enriching holiday experience, blending history, art, and archaeology in a region celebrated for its cultural treasures.
