As much of Europe grapples with economic uncertainty, the northeastern Italian city of Trieste has proven resilient, emerging as an increasingly popular destination for tourists.
According to Guerrino Lanci, president of Federalberghi Trieste, the city’s hotels maintained strong bookings throughout 2024, even during the typically quieter winter months. “New Year’s was fully booked until recent weeks,” Lanci reported, though he noted some cancellations as travelers opted for snow-covered mountain destinations.
While hotels thrived, other accommodations like B&Bs and vacation rentals experienced a slight dip. Fulvia Ercoli, from the Friuli Venezia Giulia Bed & Breakfast Association, observed a shift in demographics. “We’ve seen fewer foreign visitors this year but an increase in Italian tourists,” she said.
Local businesses reliant on tourism remain optimistic. Bruno Vesnaver, deputy vice president of FIPE Trieste, highlighted the steady flow of visitors year-round. “Trieste attracts families and travelers with moderate spending power,” Vesnaver noted. “It’s a perfect fit for us.”
Trieste’s growing appeal stems from its unique blend of history, culture, and Adriatic charm. As Italy’s “hidden gem,” it continues to attract travelers seeking an authentic experience—proving that even in challenging times, this coastal city remains a destination worth exploring.
