The Sandrinelli Tunnel, a key route for local traffic, is scheduled to close from Tuesday, January 7, to Sunday, January 12, to facilitate essential infrastructure work on the city’s water system.
The closure is part of a redevelopment initiative funded by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The water utility AcegasApsAmga will conduct a survey to assess the condition of a pipeline beneath the tunnel. According to officials, the pipeline is both outdated and deteriorated, necessitating urgent evaluation and planning for future repairs.
The survey will allow engineers to pinpoint the pipeline’s exact location and identify areas requiring intervention. To ensure safety and efficiency, vehicular traffic will be prohibited in the Sandrinelli Tunnel from 8:30 a.m. on January 7 until midnight on January 12. Access roads to the tunnel will also be closed during this period, including portions of Piazza del Sansovino and Via Silvio Pellico.
Public transportation will be permitted to pass through the tunnel under a single alternating lane restriction.
Officials have acknowledged the potential inconvenience caused by the closure and have expressed their commitment to minimizing disruption.
This project forms part of a broader effort to modernize and strengthen Trieste’s infrastructure.
