The Friuli Venezia Giulia region unveiled a sweeping new law aimed at bolstering its recreational boating sector, a strategic pillar of the local economy. Presented by Regional Councillor for Productive Activities and Tourism, Sergio Emidio Bini, the legislation, effective January 1, introduces significant investments, environmental initiatives, and training programs designed to modernize the industry.

The initial allocation of €2.7 million will fund the sector’s development, with further resources tied to the outcomes of a forthcoming masterplan. This plan will map all 25 marinas and mooring facilities along Friuli Venezia Giulia’s 96 kilometers of coastline, setting the stage for modernization and new funding opportunities.
Key features of the legislation include grants for innovation and sustainability, such as eco-bonuses for low-emission engines, financing for refitting and dismantling older boats, and support for advanced technologies aimed at reducing environmental impact. The law also targets the modernization of boating infrastructure, with grants for improving accessibility, safety, and service quality at marinas and ports.
The recreational boating sector in Friuli Venezia Giulia boasts 15,562 berths—14.3% more than neighboring Veneto—and employs approximately 2,000 people directly and indirectly. “We are one of the few regions in Italy offering non-repayable grants to support investments in this sector,” said Bini.
Additionally, the law promotes professional training and youth employment, with programs designed to enhance technical and managerial skills and facilitate entry into the industry through internships and apprenticeships.
To boost global visibility, the region plans to leverage its tourism arm, PromoTurismoFVG, in a robust marketing campaign, participating in international fairs and events. The legislation also establishes a Permanent Boating and Maritime Economy Table, tasked with strategic planning and evaluating public policies for the sector.
This initiative builds on previous investments, including €16 million in subsidized loans over the past four years and the Maritime Ventures project, which allocated €30 million to foster innovative startups in shipbuilding and port logistics.
With its ambitious reform, Friuli Venezia Giulia positions itself as a leader in sustainable, innovative, and accessible recreational boating.
