Trieste marked the Day of Remembrance with a solemn ceremony at Risiera di San Sabba, the only Nazi concentration camp in Italy equipped with a crematory oven. The event, attended by civil and religious authorities, was part of a broader program of commemorative activities held at symbolic locations across the city.
The day commemorates two significant anniversaries: the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 27, 1945, and the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Italy’s Day of Remembrance. During the ceremony, banners representing Trieste, Muggia, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and the municipalities of Duino Aurisina and San Dorligo della Valle were displayed.
In his remarks, Massimiliano Fedriga, president of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, emphasized the importance of remembering the Holocaust and criticized those who seek to distort its memory for political gain. He stated, “History, and particularly the history of the Holocaust, cannot be bent to opportunistic logic.”
The event was attended by representatives of various organizations, including those representing deportees, anti-fascist political victims, partisans, and fallen soldiers, underscoring the significance of preserving the memory of those who suffered during World War II.
