Beginning February 1, 2025, visitors to Trieste’s municipal museums will need to take note of new operating hours, as the city adjusts access to its cultural institutions while unveiling a season of compelling exhibitions.
The Revoltella Museum, Trieste’s premier modern art institution, will now welcome visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the exception of Tuesdays, though only the historic baronial section remains open due to ongoing renovations. Other museums, such as the J. J. Winckelmann Museum of Antiquities and the Sartorio Museum, will be accessible from Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The city’s Museum of Oriental Art will operate five days a week, and the War for Peace Museum “Diego de Henriquez” will also follow a Wednesday-to-Sunday schedule. Meanwhile, the Risiera di San Sabba National Monument, a former Nazi concentration camp and one of the city’s most visited sites, will maintain its daily hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The adjustments coincide with a robust lineup of temporary exhibitions. Highlights include “Towards the Peaks: Mountaineering and Trieste” at San Giusto Castle (through June 8), a deep dive into the city’s historic ties to alpine exploration. The Museum of Antiquities will present “The Myth of the Ambisontes: Roman Mercenaries in the Isonzo Valley” through March 9, while the Museum of the Sea hosts two exhibits—“The Journey into Modernity: 1924-1938”and “Rovenska – Elettra: Memories of Marconi’s Yacht”—both concluding February 16. At the Salone degli Incanti, Steve McCurry – Glimpses of the World brings the acclaimed photographer’s lens to Trieste through May 4.
Some institutions remain shuttered for renovations, including the Lloyd section of the Museum of the Sea, the Morpurgo Museum, and the Museum of Istrian, Fiuman, and Dalmatian Civilization. The Gallery of Modern Art at the Revoltella Museum remains partially closed, with only the baronial wing accessible.
For visitors looking to explore Trieste’s literary and historical past, the city’s Literature Center (LETS) and the Museum of the Risorgimento will keep their usual hours. Additionally, the Basovizza Foiba Documentation Center, which commemorates the victims of postwar violence, will maintain seasonal variations in its schedule.
As the city continues investing in cultural revitalization, officials encourage visitors to check official museum websites and www.triestecultura.it for the most up-to-date information on exhibitions and schedules.
