Visitors to Trieste will have the opportunity to explore two key historical sites within the Porto Vecchio district this month, as guided tours of the Electrical Substation and Hydrodynamic Power Plant are set to take place throughout February.
The tours, organized by the Trieste chapter of Italia Nostra, are part of an agreement with the Municipality of Trieste aimed at preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Porto Vecchio, now known as Porto Vivo.
Participants will have the chance to visit the two industrial-era facilities that played a crucial role in the port’s operations. The Electrical Substation and the Hydrodynamic Power Plant, both located in Viale Miramare, once supplied power to the bustling waterfront, which served as a major maritime hub in the Austro-Hungarian period.
Morning tours will begin at 11 a.m., with participants meeting at 10:45 a.m. Afternoon tours are scheduled for 5 p.m., with a meeting time of 4:45 p.m. The scheduled tour dates are:
- Wednesday, February 11, 2025, at 11 a.m.
- Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 11 a.m.
- Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at 11 a.m.
- Friday, February 28, 2025, at 5 p.m.
Italia Nostra requires reservations for all tours, which must be made at least five days in advance. Those interested can book a tour by contacting the organization via email at trieste@italianostra.org or by phone at +39 333 6289686.
In addition to the scheduled tours, Italia Nostra is offering private group visits on request, with dates and times to be arranged through prior booking.
Porto Vecchio, once a largely abandoned area, has seen renewed interest in recent years as part of efforts to repurpose its historical structures. The tours provide a window into the city’s industrial heritage, highlighting the role these facilities played in the development of Trieste as a strategic port.
