Hundreds gathered Monday morning at the Basovizza memorial near Trieste for Italy’s Giorno del Ricordo, honoring victims of post-WWII violence and the forced exodus of thousands of ethnic Italians from Istria, Fiume, and Dalmatia. The ceremony, marked by wreaths and solemn speeches, reflected on historical wounds that still resonate today. Through the lens of our photographer Erin McKinney, the gathering captured moments of grief, remembrance, and resilience, as attendees paid tribute to those lost. The event underscored the enduring significance of memory in shaping Italy’s understanding of its past and present.
