The Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA), a prestigious research institution in Friuli Venezia Giulia, is preparing to welcome 500 high school students for its annual SISSA Student Day, an immersive experience in contemporary scientific research.

Now in its ninth edition, the event—set for February 14—has become a sought-after opportunity for fourth- and fifth-year secondary students. This year’s cohort, hailing not only from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region but also from as far as Bergamo and Catanzaro, secured their spots within minutes of registration opening. Nearly 150 volunteers, including PhD candidates, faculty members, and administrative staff, will guide participants through a packed schedule of activities across SISSA’s classrooms and laboratories.

The day will begin with a welcome address by SISSA Director Andrea Romanino and other dignitaries, followed by three time slots of simultaneous sessions. Students will have the freedom to navigate their own learning experience, choosing from more than 20 interactive activities. Among the highlights: an introduction to detecting gravitational waves—often described as “listening” to black holes—insights into the emerging field of digital twins, and discussions on the physics of exoplanets. Artificial intelligence, one of the most debated topics in contemporary science, will take center stage in discussion-based games designed to engage young minds.

Students will also have the opportunity to participate in “Ask Me Anything” sessions, where SISSA researchers will share their academic journeys and offer insights into balancing scientific careers with personal passions. Guided tours of neuroscience laboratories, one of the most anticipated experiences of the day, reached capacity within just five minutes of bookings opening.

In a significant move toward inclusivity, SISSA has introduced a Quiet Room—a designated space for neurodivergent students or anyone needing a moment of calm during the day. This initiative reflects the institution’s broader commitment to accessibility and inclusion, which extends across its educational outreach programs.

SISSA Student Day is a flagship event of the SISSA for Schools initiative, a children’s university program that has been fostering scientific curiosity since 2012. Supported by the Educating Future Citizens network, the initiative engages students of all ages and connects them with SISSA’s community of researchers.
