With its sun-drenched shores and historic charm, the Adriatic island town of Grado has become a cornerstone of tourism in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Last year alone, the seaside destination recorded 1.4 million tourist stays, making it the third most visited location in the region. Now, regional officials are doubling down on their commitment to boosting Grado’s appeal, extending the season beyond the summer months, and ensuring that the town’s tourism infrastructure keeps pace with growing demand.

L’assessore Bini con il sindaco di Grado, Giuseppe Corbatto, e il vicesindaco e assessore al Turismo, Greta Reverdito.

In a meeting on Tuesday, Sergio Emidio Bini, the Regional Councillor for Productive Activities and Tourism, met with Grado’s Mayor Giuseppe Corbatto and Deputy Mayor and Tourism Councillor Greta Reverdito to discuss plans for the upcoming tourist season.

“The Region has always supported initiatives aimed at attracting visitors to the ‘Island of the Sun,’” Bini said, referring to Grado’s nickname. “Thanks to the promotional efforts of PromoTurismoFVG, we have strengthened the town’s presence on the international tourism map. Moving forward, collaboration will be key—pooling resources and expertise to elevate the quality of entertainment, services, and overall visitor experience.”

A Strategic Investment in Tourism

For the regional government, Grado’s continued rise as a travel destination is more than a local success story—it’s a strategic priority. Officials are working closely with Grado’s municipal government, local tourism operators, and business consortiums to enhance infrastructure, increase marketing efforts, and, crucially, combat seasonal tourism fluctuations.

Bini emphasized the importance of extending Grado’s tourist season beyond the peak summer months, ensuring a steady stream of visitors year-round. “Grado is a jewel of our region, and it is vital that we make it attractive to tourists outside of the traditional summer period,” he said. “This means diversifying the local offering and improving services across the board.”

A Landmark Event on the Horizon

Beyond its pristine beaches and cultural heritage, Grado is set to host a major international event that could further cement its standing as a premier destination. In May 2026, the town will welcome the 25th International Firefighters’ Gathering, a prestigious event expected to draw 10,000 visitors and 400 emergency vehicles from around the world. The Region has pledged its full support for the event, recognizing its potential to showcase Grado on the global stage.

“The decision to host such an important event in Grado speaks to the growing international recognition of our region,” Bini said. “It reflects a shift in how Friuli Venezia Giulia is perceived—no longer just a hidden gem, but a destination of real significance.”

As officials work to solidify Grado’s reputation as a year-round destination, the town stands at a turning point. With rising tourist numbers, strategic investments, and marquee events on the horizon, the ‘Island of the Sun’ is shining brighter than ever.
