The Special Intervention Unit of Trieste’s Local Police has increased its presence throughout the city, conducting a series of targeted operations in January to maintain public order and safety. The initiative, aimed at addressing criminal activities and public disturbances, was detailed in a report released by City Security Councillor Caterina de Gavardo.

“In January, our officers prioritized a strong presence throughout the city,” de Gavardo stated. “This led to a variety of interventions, including patrols in high-risk areas, targeted inspections during city markets, and coordinated high-impact operations in collaboration with the Police Headquarters.”

The report outlined 16 control and monitoring operations in Barriera Vecchia, an area receiving heightened attention following recent incidents. Additionally, authorities conducted eight targeted patrols at city markets to prevent illegal activities and six high-impact interventions in various locations to enhance public safety.

Criminal Incidents and Arrests

Law enforcement referred three individuals to the Judicial Authority for criminal offenses:

  • A robbery suspect was arrested after attempting to leave a downtown store with stolen clothing, pushing a security guard in the process. The intervention was conducted in cooperation with officers from the First District.
  • A vandalism case involved an individual who discharged fire extinguishers onto vehicles parked in the Silos parking lot, leading to a formal complaint.
  • A repeat offender was reported on three separate occasions for failing to comply with an expulsion order. The individual was also cited for urinating inside a supermarket in the presence of customers.

Authorities also issued six citations for public intoxication, with violations occurring predominantly in Largo Barriera, Piazza Dalmazia, Piazza Goldoni, and Via San Francesco. One case resulted in a prefectural expulsion order barring an individual from the city’s designated red zone 3.

Administrative Violations

In addition to criminal charges, the report listed several administrative penalties:

  • Smoking violations: One individual was fined for smoking inside the Largo Santos bus station.
  • Animal control offenses: Two citations were issued under Regional Law 20/12—one for an unleashed dog on Scala dei Giganti and another for improper animal management on Via Boccaccio.
  • Urban safety infractions: A total of 35 violations of the Urban Police Regulations were recorded:
    • 25 fines for aggressive begging, with confiscation of funds in five cases.
    • One fine for illegally directing parking in Piazzale Straulino e Rode.
    • Nine fines for unauthorized camping in various city locations.

Following these infractions, officers issued 31 formal warnings instructing individuals to cease illicit activities and leave the area. Two individuals received additional notices for failing to comply with removal orders. One persistent violator was issued a Dacur, an urban exclusion order from all areas along the Rive until July.

The measures are part of ongoing efforts to maintain safety and public order in the city. “Ensuring security and urban decorum remains a top priority,” de Gavardo stated. “We will continue to enforce regulations to protect the well-being of all Trieste residents.”
