The long-anticipated Hungarian terminal at the Port of Trieste has officially entered its construction phase, marking a major step forward in a project that is set to reshape regional trade dynamics.

On Thursday, Italian and Hungarian officials visited the Aquilinia construction site, where work has begun on the quay wall and dredging operations. The 32-hectare terminal, expected to be operational within two years, represents a significant milestone in an initiative launched in 2018 to strengthen Hungary’s direct access to maritime trade routes.

“This marks a turning point for a project that is strategic to the growth of this territory, leveraging its access to the sea as a key advantage,” said Pierpaolo Roberti, Regional Councillor for Local Autonomy, who joined Italy’s Deputy Minister for Infrastructure, Edoardo Rixi, and Hungary’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Levente Magyar, for the site visit.

The total estimated cost for the new terminal is €200 million, with substantial investments from both the Hungarian and Italian governments. Italy is also allocating funds to expand port infrastructure and improve accessibility in the area.

Rixi highlighted the project’s broader significance, calling it a symbol of international cooperation and a critical opportunity for European economic growth. “This initiative not only grants Hungary, one of the EU’s top exporters, direct access to the Mediterranean but also strengthens Italy’s trade connections with Central and Eastern Europe,” he said.

Following the morning site visit, Roberti, Rixi, and Magyar held institutional talks at the Eastern Adriatic Sea Port Authority headquarters. In the afternoon, Sergio Emidio Bini, Regional Councillor for Economic Development, met with Rixi to discuss further expansion plans for the ports of Trieste and Monfalcone.

As construction moves forward, the Adria Port terminal is expected to enhance Trieste’s strategic position as a logistics hub and deepen economic ties between Italy and Hungary.
