The coastal town of Muggia is officially embracing Carnival season, as colorful decorations now adorn the historic center and preparations are underway in Piazzale Caliterna, where kiosks and amusement park rides will soon welcome festivalgoers.

This year marks the 71st edition of Muggia’s beloved Carnival, which will officially begin on Thursday, February 27. The inaugural ceremony in Piazza Marconi will feature live music, entertainment, and the traditional handing over of the city’s keys by Mayor Paolo Polidori to King Carnival. Festivities will span an entire week, culminating in the much-anticipated parade of floats on Sunday, March 2.

However, as the town readies for days of revelry, local authorities have announced a series of traffic and parking restrictions to accommodate the event’s large crowds and ensure public safety.

Navigating Muggia During Carnival

For residents and visitors alike, understanding the new traffic regulations is essential. Parking bans and road closures will be in effect throughout the celebration period, with strict enforcement measures in place.

Parking Restrictions:

  • The rooftop level of the Caliterna parking lot will remain closed to all vehicles, except those involved in event operations, until midnight on March 6.
  • In Via Battisti, designated parking spaces for ASUGI service vehicles will be off-limits until March 6.

Traffic Regulations for the Float Parade:
The highlight of the Carnival—the grand float parade—is scheduled for Sunday, March 2. Should inclement weather intervene, the event will be postponed to March 9. To accommodate the parade route and crowds, extensive road closures will take effect from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the following streets:

  • Via di Trieste, Via Battisti, and Via Matteotti
  • Viale XXV Aprile, Via Forti, Via Reti, and Via D’Annunzio
  • Piazza della Repubblica and Largo Caduti per la Libertà
  • Additional closures will impact the main access roads leading to the town center

Public transportation will be rerouted during this time, with bus line 20 following an adjusted route via Via S. Barbara – Viale Frausin – Via Matteotti – Via Deluca. Some street directions will be temporarily reversed to accommodate the altered flow of traffic.

From 12:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., additional restrictions will prohibit vehicle entry to key thoroughfares, except for emergency services. Traffic disruptions are expected to be significant, and authorities advise residents to plan alternative routes or use public transit.

Further Restrictions Throughout the Festival

Beyond parade day, further limitations will be in place on select evenings, particularly from February 27 through March 4.

  • From 6:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. nightly, parking bans will apply on multiple streets, including Via di Trieste, Piazzale Curiel, and Via Tonello.
  • From 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m., traffic flow will be restricted in the historic center.
  • Bike parking is also prohibited in the historic district between February 26 and March 5. Any bicycles left in unauthorized areas will be impounded.

A Town Transformed

Carnival in Muggia is more than just a festival; it is a cultural institution that brings the community together. As grandstands rise in Piazza della Repubblica and costumed performers prepare to dazzle the crowds, the town is bracing for one of its busiest weeks of the year.

Despite the logistical challenges posed by road closures and traffic diversions, the spirit of Carnival is in the air, and Muggia is ready to celebrate.
