On March 6, 2025, at 6:30 PM, the Lega Navale Italiana, Trieste Section, will host a public event exploring the intersection of maritime culture and speleology. The event, part of the organization’s Thursday lecture series, will take place at its headquarters on Molo Fratelli Bandiera 9 and feature a presentation on the Speleovivarium, a museum dedicated to underground life.
Founded in the 1980s within a former air-raid shelter, the museum is managed by volunteers from the Società Adriatica di Speleologia. It was established to protect the Proteus, an amphibian native to subterranean environments, and to promote scientific research on cave ecosystems. The evening will include a discussion led by museum representatives Isabella Abbona, Luciano Longo, and Edgardo Mauri, moderated by Maurizio Romano, and introduced by Roberto Benedetti, president of the Trieste section.
A film screening will provide a virtual look at the Proteus’s habitat, highlighting recent discoveries about its biology and longevity.
The Lega Navale Italiana, Trieste Section, founded in 1919, has long been a center for nautical activities, maritime culture, and environmental conservation. The organization played a role in the development of the Faro della Vittoria (Victory Lighthouse) and, in recent decades, has expanded its facilities, including a nautical base housing 150 boats.
In addition to its sporting and recreational activities, the Lega Navale offers boating courses, school programs, and initiatives for people with disabilities, while also focusing on marine environmental protection.
The event is free and open to the public.
