Filming of the Greek television series The Great Chimera, inspired by the novel of the same name by M. Karagatsis, will conclude on Friday, February 28, in Trieste. The production, directed by Vardis Marinakis and backed by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Commission, has taken place across multiple locations in the Italian port city.

The series, produced by Foss Productions with Beta Film and Mompracem as executive producer, follows Marina, a young woman who, after a painful family past, finds solace in Greek literature. Her life changes when she falls in love with Yannis, a Greek captain, and follows him to his homeland. As financial ruin threatens her husband’s shipping business, she becomes entangled in a cycle of love, ambition, and tragedy.

Filming took place in several notable Trieste landmarks, including Duino Castle, Caffè San Marco, and the University of Trieste. Marinakis, who previously visited the city during the ShorTS International Film Festival, cited its “melancholic atmosphere” as a key reason for choosing it as a filming location.

Production spanned 18 days, involving 40 local crew members and more than 200 extras. The series, which explores themes of passion and fate, is expected to bring a psychological depth reminiscent of Greek tragedy.
