Trieste is gearing up for its 31st annual Carnival celebrations, a much-anticipated event that will see seven city districts take part in colorful parades and festivities from February 28 to March 5. While most of Italy’s schools remain open, Friuli Venezia Giulia is one of the few regions where students enjoy an official holiday for Carnival, allowing families and local businesses to fully engage in the festivities.
The highlight of the celebrations will be the Grand Masquerade Parade on Tuesday, March 4, with costumed participants weaving through the city center from Piazza Oberdan to Piazza Unità d’Italia. While traditional floats will be absent this year due to construction at Porto Vecchio, organizers promise an engaging spectacle featuring groups, individuals, and especially children, the heart of Trieste’s Carnival.
Rioni (districts) will also host their own parades throughout the week, featuring schools, community centers, and musical performances. The event will conclude on March 5 with the traditional Carnival Funeral in Servola, where the symbolic figure of “Cornelio” will be laid to rest in a theatrical farewell.
The Carnival is organized by the Trieste Carnival Coordination Committee with support from the Municipality of Trieste and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. Updates and event details can be found on the official Carnevale di TriesteFacebook page.
