Over the weekend, Italian law enforcement ramped up highway patrols across the region as part of an extensive traffic safety campaign. The initiative, led by the Trieste Traffic Police Department, took place from February 27 through March 2, with officers deployed along more than 500 kilometers of major highways, including the A23 Alpe Adria and the A4 Portogruaro junction.
Authorities said the objective was twofold: to deter unsafe driving behaviors and to enhance territorial surveillance, acknowledging the complexity of highway networks as dynamic environments requiring constant oversight.
According to official figures, law enforcement conducted checks on 656 individuals and 326 vehicles over the course of the operation. A total of 216 traffic violations were recorded, including 15 instances of speeding, two cases of driving under the influence, three violations related to lack of insurance coverage, and 15 citations for failure to wear seat belts.
Additionally, officers revoked 12 driver’s licenses and four vehicle registration documents. One vehicle was seized, and an administrative impoundment was carried out. Law enforcement also imposed a total of 205 penalty points for traffic infractions.
Authorities placed particular emphasis on the freight transport sector, citing concerns over safety regulations. Officers documented 22 violations related to mandatory driving and rest periods, three cases of non-compliance with regulations for transporting hazardous materials, and 18 instances of overloading. Six additional violations pertained to breaches of international freight transport regulations.
During the operation, police arrested a Romanian national at the San Giorgio di Nogaro toll station, located in the municipality of Porpetto. Officers conducting a routine inspection of a transport vehicle discovered an outstanding arrest warrant issued by the Trieste Prosecutor’s Office. The suspect was wanted in connection with offenses related to facilitating illegal immigration and had three years remaining on their sentence. The individual was taken into custody and transported to Udine Prison.
Officials stated that similar highway safety initiatives will be carried out periodically to maintain high standards of security and law enforcement across Italy’s transportation network.
