The regional government of Friuli Venezia Giulia has authorized an emergency project to mitigate flood risks along the Menariolo and Rabuiese streams, allocating up to €300,000 to the Municipality of Muggia. The funding, provided by the regional Civil Protection authority, aims to safeguard urban and industrial areas vulnerable to flooding.
The decree, signed by Riccardo Riccardi, the region’s Civil Protection councillor, allows for the immediate commencement of hydraulic improvement works, which will be managed by the municipal administration. The project includes restoring water flow areas and repairing hydraulic infrastructure along the two streams.
“These interventions are essential to repairing infrastructure damaged by a severe weather event that affected the area in September 2024,” Mr. Riccardi said in a statement.
The decree also outlines a timeline for the project’s execution. The Municipality of Muggia must submit a technical report and final project documentation by September 30, 2025. Construction work is scheduled to begin by November 30, 2025, with completion expected by October 30, 2026.
Flooding has been a recurring issue in the region, with extreme weather events becoming more frequent. Local officials have emphasized the urgency of such mitigation efforts to protect both residential and economic areas from future climate-related disruptions.
