The historic Opicina tram resumed service Tuesday morning after a temporary halt caused by a mechanical failure, according to a statement from Trieste Trasporti, the city’s public transportation operator. The first run departed at 7 a.m. in both directions following urgent repairs to a damaged bearing in the tram’s shield car.
The failure, which occurred the previous Monday, led to an immediate response from technicians. However, the repair process proved more intricate than initially anticipated. “The extent of the damage required the replacement of several shield car components, some of which were notably heavy and needed to be transported with specialized equipment,” the company said.
Repairs were conducted at a dedicated workshop with assistance from external suppliers. Work continued uninterrupted in an effort to minimize service disruption while adhering to stringent safety protocols.
The Opicina tram, a fixture of Trieste’s public transit system and a cherished piece of the city’s heritage, has faced multiple service interruptions in recent years due to aging infrastructure. Trieste Trasporti emphasized its commitment to maintaining the line while ensuring passenger safety.
The company did not specify whether further maintenance work would be required in the coming months but assured commuters that all repairs had been carried out according to the highest standards.
