One of Trieste’s most beautiful parks, Villa Engelmann, is set to undergo a major restoration, with work beginning this month on the colonnade in its upper garden. The €250,000 project aims to ensure the structural safety of the 19th-century limestone columns and enhance public access to the historic space.

The restoration, presented on March 19 by city officials, will involve dismantling and reinforcing the colonnade’s 32 limestone columns, restoring the wrought-iron pergola, and upgrading the surrounding area. The existing porphyry stone pavement will be cleaned and repositioned, while new stone benches and improved lighting will be installed.

“The park is a valued green space for Trieste residents, particularly families,” said Michele Babuder, the city’s Councillor for Territorial Policies. “This project will preserve its historical significance while making it safer and more enjoyable.”

Located in the San Luigi neighborhood, Villa Engelmann has long been a popular retreat for residents seeking a quiet, shaded place to walk and relax. Over time, the colonnade has suffered significant wear, including structural instability and damage from weather exposure and a fallen tree.

The restoration, designed by architect Andrea Benedetti and engineer Fabio Marassi, has received approval from regional heritage authorities. Work has been contracted to L.A.A.R. Srl, a firm based in Udine, and is expected to take 120 days.
