A new initiative in Trieste aims to engage students in environmental conservation by monitoring the health of the Gulf of Trieste. The project, a collaboration between the Regional Environmental Protection Agency (ARPA), the Nautical Institute “Galvani,” and the Trieste section of the Italian Naval League, was announced on Wednesday by Fabio Scoccimarro, the region’s environmental protection councilor.

The initiative will involve students in collecting and analyzing data on water quality along a designated route, known as a “transect,” comparing their findings with environmental models and radar data. ARPA will process the information for research purposes.

Scoccimarro described the project as a forward-looking effort to instill environmental awareness in young people, emphasizing the importance of sustainable marine resource management. The initiative, he said, reflects the region’s commitment to education and future collaborations in various fields.

The program will continue through October, culminating during the Barcolana regatta, one of the region’s most significant maritime events.
