The waterfront of Barcola, a popular seaside area in Trieste, is set for significant redevelopment. Under a new plan, the coastal area will expand, incorporating protected bays with pebble beaches, tidal pools, ramps for small boats, and a renovated Topolini area featuring an arena for water sports.
The project includes a 318 percent increase in the length of coastline designed for sea access and swimming, along with a 677 percent expansion of spaces for bathers. The initiative aims to enhance accessibility while strengthening the coastline against environmental challenges.
The plan was conceived in early 2023, before a series of autumn storms impacted the area. Originally focused on improving recreational facilities, the project has taken on additional importance in addressing coastal resilience and adapting to potential sea level changes.
“This vulnerability is expected to increase as sea levels rise in the coming decades,” said Giulio Paladini, one of the project’s lead designers, along with Tazio di Pretoro. The regional government commissioned the two to develop a strategy for the waterfront.
The first phase of work will focus on restoring breakwaters damaged by the 2023 storms. Fabio Scoccimarro, the regional councilor for the environment, announced that €3 million has been allocated for these repairs, with contracts expected to be awarded soon.
The redevelopment will take place in two phases. The first, aimed at raising submerged breakwaters, is scheduled for completion by May to ensure that the coastline remains accessible by early June. “These interventions are essential for the broader redevelopment project, which will be carried out in collaboration with the municipality,” said Scoccimarro.
The larger redevelopment project could begin as early as 2027.
The plan consists of 11 areas of intervention, all focused on improving coastal safety, accessibility, and usability for residents and visitors. The redevelopment is intended to provide long-term benefits for the community while maintaining Barcola’s role as a key coastal destination.
