For the first time in its history, Trieste Airport will offer daily flights to London, a move that underscores the growing demand for air travel between northeastern Italy and the British capital.
Starting next week, flights to London Stansted—operated by Ryanair and Air Malta—will run every day from Ronchi dei Legionari, a significant increase from previous years. Through May 31, eight weekly flights will be available, doubling last year’s schedule. From June to September, service will be reduced to six weekly flights, before returning to eight in October.
“This London route is strategically important,” said Marco Consalvo, the airport’s chief executive. “Last summer, occupancy rates consistently exceeded 90%.”
The increase in flights is part of a broader expansion at Trieste Airport, which is adding new summer routes to Prague, Lamezia Terme, Bucharest, Rotterdam, and Stockholm. In total, the airport will serve 27 destinations—nine domestic and 13 international—marking a 26% increase in weekly departures compared to last summer.
Passenger numbers are rising accordingly. In the first two months of 2025, the airport recorded a 41% increase in travelers compared to the same period last year. Officials expect to reach 1.6 million passengers by year’s end.
The London expansion also coincides with Stansted Airport’s own growth plans. The British hub handled 29.4 million passengers in 2024, a 7.2% increase from the previous year. A £1.1 billion modernization project, set for completion within five years, aims to push that figure beyond 43 million.
Trieste Airport’s trajectory suggests it is capitalizing on renewed demand for air travel, positioning itself as a key player in Italy’s regional aviation sector.
