The city of Trieste is set to create its first urban park in 150 years as part of a broader redevelopment of its historic Porto Vecchio waterfront district. The project, which includes a pedestrian walkway, a cycling lane, and landscaped green spaces, marks a significant milestone in the transformation of the once-industrial port area into a public space for recreation and community use.

The new linear park will be built between the second and third rows of warehouses in the Porto Vecchio area, known locally as Porto Vivo. It will be shaded by 680 trees from 13 different species and will include natural hills, water features, and a dedicated 3,500-square-meter area for sports activities.

The design features six distinct landscape zones connected by a continuous route between two reflecting pools. Water plays a central role in the project, appearing and disappearing along the path in a way that aims to integrate natural and urban elements.

The park will serve as a link between the northern Bovedo parking area in Barcola and Trieste’s city center to the south. According to officials, the project is intended not only to provide green space but also to improve mobility and encourage sustainable urban living.

Construction has been awarded to CNS (Consorzio Nazionale Servizi Società Cooperativa), which secured the national contract for the project. The timeline for completion is 630 consecutive days, with a projected end date of December 23, 2026.

The Porto Vecchio redevelopment has been a long-term goal for city planners and regional authorities, aiming to revitalize a historically significant but underutilized part of Trieste. The park is expected to become a key feature of the renewed waterfront and a new gathering space for residents and visitors alike.
