On April 10, Italy marks the 173rd anniversary of the founding of the State Police, originally established in 1852 as the Public Security Guards. The 1981 law n. 121 transformed the force into a civilian administration, enhancing its democratization and unionization, bringing it closer to the community with a modern approach.
The theme for this year’s celebrations, “Always There,” reflects the police’s ongoing mission to serve the public, fostering a sense of community-based security. Data from March 2024 to March 2025 shows significant policing efforts, including 336 arrests, 5,960 investigations, and 296,481 people and 89,101 vehicles controlled in the province.
Public Order Services and High-Impact Operations
The Trieste police force managed 250 public order services, ensuring the safe conduct of major events, including the G7 Education Ministers’ meeting and the Italian Catholic Week with the Pope’s presence. These efforts also involved intensified surveillance in areas known for public disturbances.
Territory Control and Crime Prevention
A total of 32,356 emergency calls were received, with police performing 7,552 interventions. Specialized units also addressed sensitive sites, and the Bomb Disposal Unit carried out 27 operations, including the neutralization of dangerous devices.
Crime Prevention Division
The Anti-Crime Division focused on domestic violence, issuing 58 warnings for domestic abuse and 13 for stalking. They also implemented the “Zeus” protocol, which involves a multi-disciplinary approach to prevent repeat offenses by domestic abusers.
Scientific Police and Immigration
In forensic operations, the Scientific Police processed 5,762 people for criminal investigations. Meanwhile, the Immigration Office handled 2,244 irregular migrants and issued 14,850 residence permits. The police also conducted extensive border control operations, identifying over 167,000 individuals and preventing the illegal entry of thousands.
Tackling Human Trafficking
A significant operation disrupted a Chinese human trafficking ring along the Italian-Slovenian border. The operation led to 9 arrests and the seizure of properties and vehicles used to exploit migrants, underscoring the commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
Through these extensive efforts, the Italian State Police continues its commitment to public security, adapting to modern challenges while ensuring the safety of all citizens.
