It was a celebration of motion, joy, and learning in the heart of the city, as 1,500 children between the ages of 3 and 11 gathered in the main square for the Trieste Spring Young — a lively event that forms part of the broader Spring Run festival.
The aim was simple: have fun, but also foster a love of running early on, as a way to combat sedentary lifestyles. “It’s not just about competition,” said Roberto Furlanic, the event’s organizer. “It’s about getting familiar with the act of running itself.”
Furlanic emphasized the need to encourage physical activity from an early age. While Italian primary schools have recently begun to include specialists in motor education during the final two years, the hours are limited — and often not enough. Starting earlier, he noted, would have a greater impact.
Fifty schools took part in this year’s event, though many were unable to join due to staffing or organizational challenges. Still, every child who participated received a prize — and while there was a podium for the fastest, the focus remained on inclusivity and celebration. The day ended, appropriately, with refreshments for all.
