The modernization and expansion of Gate IV, the main access point to the Port of Trieste, has officially begun, marking the final and most strategic phase in the port’s ongoing innovation process.

The Eastern Adriatic Sea Port Authority, which oversees the Port of Trieste, has over the past few years implemented a paperless access system through its Port Community System. Now, the authority is moving forward with a broader plan to upgrade Gate IV through an integrated project that combines physical infrastructure with advanced digital systems.

The initiative is co-funded by the Interreg VI-A Italy–Croatia 2021–2027 program and aims to achieve full digitalization of customs, logistics, and security procedures by 2026. The new system is designed to improve transit times, streamline control processes, and enhance the management of traffic flows while reducing the risk of errors. It will also enable the collection and analysis of data on vehicle, cargo, and personnel movements, further integrating with the port’s existing digital infrastructure.

The public tender for the technical and economic feasibility design (known in Italy as PFTE) has been published, with a base value of €221,974.52 (total value €246,801.72). The contract will cover both physical and digital aspects of the modernization, including software, hardware, interoperability services, and design-phase safety coordination.

Planned infrastructure upgrades will not only introduce new technologies—such as OCR cameras, QR/barcode scanners, and automated software—but also reconfigure the layout of Gate IV. These changes include increasing the number of entry lanes to improve traffic flow, optimizing lane lengths to prevent congestion on Trieste’s main roads, and functionally separating lanes to ensure efficient movement for both inspected and non-inspected vehicles. The gate’s configuration will also be designed to accommodate future expansions.
